Gujranwala is a city in the north east of the Punjab province. It is the sixth largest city in Pakistan with a population of 1,132,509 (1998 census) Gujranwala is located at 32.16° North, 74.18° East and is 226 metres (744 ft) above sea-level. Zong Launches Android Handset, Priced at Rs. 15,999

Zong is all set to launch a fair priced Android handset in Pakistan. Already available Android 2.2 handsets in Pakistan have been priced for the high end segment of the consumers.

From what we have heard so far, Zong’s Android is Priced at 15,999, with a new Zong SIM.

Giant Pumpkin Weighs More than a Car

Already 17 feet in diameter, and weighing 750 kilograms, the giant pumpkin grown by Ian and Stuart Paton is set to become the new world’s largest pumpkin.

Twin brothers Ian and Stuart Paton have been growing giant pumpkins for the last 30 years, and this year they think one of their pumpkins could actually set a new world record. Tipping the scale at 750 kilograms, and growing by around 13 kilograms every day, this giant pumpkin is already heavier than a Fiat 500.

The Paton brothers of Lymington, Hampshire, hope their produce can “put on enough weight” by the official weighing, on Saturday, to beat the old record of 784 kilos. It has already beat the British and European records and by their calculations it could soon be the world’s heaviest pumpkin. Their pumpkins have been getting bigger each year, as they’ve been learning new tricks about how to grow and breed them. This might just be their year.

1...2...3 BLAST OFF PHUSSSS Prithvi-II ballistic missile test goes haywire

Chandipur, Orissa: India's indigenously-developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II ballistic missile, which was to undergo a user's trial, fails to take off from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, off the Orissa coast.

Though the ITR authorities were not immediately available for comment, defence sources said the sophisticated missile could not take off during the planned trial from the launch complex-III of the test range due to some "technical snag."

"The failure to lift Prithvi-II was due to a snag either in the main missile or the sub-system, including the launcher," they said, adding the test-fire was slated to be held as part of user's trial by the armed forces.

During Friday's planned trial, a noise could be heard as smoke billowed from the launch site around the time of the blasting.

Efforts were on to ascertain the exact reason behind the failure on the part of the missile to take off and defence scientists were examining the matter thoroughly, they said.

The last four user's trials of the surface-to-surface missile were successfully conducted during the about one year period, from the same site in the ITR.

The last trial was conducted on June 18, this year.

The test firing of the state-of-the-art missile, which has already been inducted into armed forces, was planned as users trial by the specially formed "Strategic Force Command" (SFC), the sources said.

ICC promises leniency for suspended trio

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has entered into a constructive deal with the International Cricket Council (ICC) which will allow the three suspended cricketers freedom to resume their international careers if no evidence is found against them shortly, according to details received by The Express Tribune.

The PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt confirmed that the Pakistan board and the ICC have agreed to halt the war of words relating to spot-fixing allegations following reconciliation between the two parties. Butt earlier termed the ICC’s investigation into the allegations as “terrible” and also called for the removal of ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat.

“The ICC has promised to show leniency and has shown willingness to close this matter soon which forms part of the reconciliation between the two parties,” a PCB official told The Express Tribune. “Scotland Yard has failed to gather any evidence against our players despite weeks of investigation and the ICC, in the meeting with the PCB chairman, assured him that they will not stretch the matter unnecessarily.”

Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were provisionally suspended by the ICC earlier this month after theNews of The World placed spot-fixing allegations on them during Lord’s Test. The three players were questioned by Scotland Yard but were allowed to travel back to Pakistan after assuring their availability if needed.

“The ICC has given the punishment without getting any proof which is concerning them [the ICC] now as well. Due to this, they have changed their stance towards the players. It now seems likely that the players will be cleared and allowed to resume their careers.”

The three players have already sent their replies to the governing body through their UK-based lawyer Elizabeth Robertson in which they pleaded not guilty and asked the suspensions to be lifted. The ICC, according to its rules, will have to form a tribunal which will look into the replies.

“We have been told that the tribunal would be formed soon which, if something substantial can’t be found against them, will not extend the case.”

PCB consults lawyer after ECB’s notice

The PCB has also decided to involve Robertson in the ongoing tussle with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) following the latest allegations against the Pakistan team after the third One-Day International (ODI) at The Oval.

Following the chairman’s remarks linking the England players with match-fixing, the ECB sent a letter to the PCB demanding an apology from the chairman with a legal case to follow if that was not to happen.

A PCB official confirmed to The Express Tribune that the board had received the letter from the ECB.

“We have received a letter from the ECB and will reply to it shortly, probably in a day or two,” said the official. “Butt had a conversation with Robertson to discuss the repercussions of the PCB’s possible steps on the issue.”

The PCB official, however, said that the chairman was reluctant to apologise for his comments.

“Butt is likely to maintain his stance as to why the Pakistan players were accused of fixing without any evidence and may not send an apology for his comments.”

Butt claimed he was informed by gamblers that English players took bribes for throwing the third ODI at The Oval which Pakistan won after making a comeback.

The chairman’s remarks came after a newspaper report claimed that the “scoring
partern” of the match was pre-determined and the ICC was informed of this beforehand.

Chicken Biryani Recipe

• Basmati rice – 2 cups
• Chicken pieces – 3/4 kg.
• Onion – 3 large, sliced
• Yoghurt – 1 cup
• Ginger paste – 1 tsp
• Garlic paste – 1/2 tsp
• Green chilli paste – 1 tsp
• Tomato puree – 1/2 cup
• Red chilli powder – 2 tsp
• Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
• Cumin powder (roasted) – 1 tsp
• Cardamom powder – 1/2 tsp
• Garam masala powder – 2 tsp
• Milk – 1/2 cup
• Saffron – a pinch
• Coriander powder – 1 tsp
• Green coriander leaves – 2 tbsp, chopped
• Water – 3 1/2 cups
• Oil – 7 tbsp
• Salt as required

How to make Chicken Biryani Recipe:

1. Make a mixture with tomato yoghurt, puree, green chilli paste, ginger garlic paste, red chilli powder, roasted cumin powder, turmeric powder, garam masala powder, coriander powder and salt. 2. Take the chicken and marinade it in the same mixture. Let it rest for 3-4 hours. 3. Put oil in a pan, heat it and fry onions till they turn golden brown. 4. Now, to this add the marinated chicken and cook the entire mixture for 10 mints. 5. After that in a pressure cooker, take the rice and add 3 1/2 cups of water to it. Also, take the saffron, mix with the milk and add to the rice. 6. Lastly, add the cardamom powder and the chicken pieces, along with the marinade. 7. Mix all the ingredients gently, cover with the cooker lid and pressure cook for 1 whistle.

Garnish with green coriander leaves and serve hot.

Is K Peechay Amerika Ka Hath Hai

Today I was sitting and had nothing to do, and suddenly I started thinking about the “Is K Peechay Amerika Ka Hath Hai” concept. Many questions arose in my mind, whether it is actually America who is behind all the incidents happening in this world? Or is it just a propaganda against the super power. When I was in school life, I used to read many quotations of different famous people, and used to consider myself as one and write some quotations of my own.

Once I wrote:

“You will never get a single answer for a question.”

I am still pretty much sure, that you can never attain a single answer of a question or a problem, even if it’s related to science. If I ask what is 2 + 2? Most probably you will say 2 + 2 = 4. But what if I say 2 + 2 = 1 +3? You cannot say its incorrect answer. Similar thing goes with the question “Is K Peechay Amerika Ka Haath Hai Ya Nahi?”.

To some extend, everything seems to be preplanned by USA. Pakistan is going down, Its America! We don’t have anything to eat! Its America! We don’t have money! Its America! We are getting sick because of some virus! Yes again its American hand behind all this.

Let’s see what could be possible and what could not be. Pakistan’s production level of wheat decreased. Why? May be we are using such seeds which are genetically modified by researchers that the seed will be only reproduced twice or thrice, and then you will have to buy a new seed. Yes! There is a possibility of such thing (Production & Marketing). The fertilizer you are using, may be effecting the reproduction level of those crops. We don’t have money and getting poor day by day. Yes, it is possible under the current economical system of capitalization that economy is being controlled by such bodies. And last of all “We get sick, zaroor amerika ne virus philaya ho ga”. If I take the example of a game and movie “Resident Evil” (most of you might have already seen it and know the story) then, yes, it is possible to spread a virus first and then market the anti-viral medicines to earn.

But, beside all this lets see some things from an other point of view. One thing is already happening, lets say, AIDs is spreading and an American firm started researching on it massively and produce a cure to it. What will the criticizers say? “zaroor Amerika ne pehlay aids philai ho gi, phir us ka cure nikal diya hai” (It must be America who first created AIDs and then produced its cure). Come on people, everything does not have to do with America behind it. I took the example of AIDs for a purpose, that its your mistake that you do, you get infected and then you blame America for it. If one company takes an advantage of the on-going problem by researching on it and producing something, why do we criticize on it then? I will sign off with this question to you people – Is it really America behind everything? (Kya Wakay Hee Amerika Saab Chezoon K Peechay Hai?) … !!

A PAKISTAN international cricketer is being investigated by the UK Border Agency following his appearances forWoodhall Spa this season.

All-rounder Fawad Alam is being probed for allegedly breaching the terms of his visa by playing for Spa in the Lincolnshire ECB Premier League.

It is believed the matter came to light during Alam's appearances for his country during the recent one-day series with England.

The 24-year-old joined up with Pakistan after his stint at Woodhall, where he averaged 76 with the bat and took 25 wickets in seven matches.

But his right to play club cricket in this country is being questioned by the Agency, which is responsible for securing the border and controlling migration in the UK.

"We can confirm that we are looking into these allegations," said Agency assistant director Phil Dyer.

"Clubs that wish to employ sportsmen or women from overseas must check that they comply with the conditions attached to their visa."

When contacted by the Echo yesterday, Woodhall chairman Tony Armstrong said he had no knowledge of the investigation into Alam, who has played three Test matches for his country and 19 one-day internationals.
